Wild at Hart Nursery & Design

Native landscape design and nursery based out of Ojai, California.

Our approach

Wild at Hart Nursery & Design creates thoughtful, regenerative landscape designs focusing on native and non-invasive plant species and natural resources. Through this process, our designs help restore the natural ecosystem while creating beautiful, regenerative outdoor spaces for our clients.

Creating a native landscape doesn’t mean having an overgrown meadow in your front or backyard. We utilize our local native plant species and pollinators to create carbon-sequestering landscapes and traditional-style gardens. If you are looking for a landscape design with natural esthetics that supports the local ecosystem, Wild at Hart can transform your space into a beautiful, outdoor retreat.

Stay tuned for our native plant nursery coming in 2025, serving Ojai, California, and our surrounding regions!

Achieving low maintenance and natural aesthetics.

Due to our Mediterranean climate, many of our native plants require little water and grow at a slower pace compared to non-native species. By using native plants that have thrived for hundreds, if not thousands of years, our landscape designs not only save water and aid our local environment—they are lower maintenance because they require less trimming to reach their full, beautiful potential. We can replace lawns with native grasses, use native flowers, shrubs, and trees instead of invasive ones, and incorporate natural resources that support native habitats. Our thoughtful designs will help you achieve a low-maintenance and beautiful outdoor space.

Designing the space of your dreams.

Just as the wind and ocean have currents and paths for energy to flow, so does the land. Wild at Hart considers how you want to use and move through your property into our landscape and hardscape designs. From natural swells for reduced flooding to lighting, natural mounds, pools, pathways, and patios, we will work with you to achieve outdoor and living spaces that are both beautiful and functional.

Restoring local ecosystems with native plants.

Many animal and insect species depend on native flora to thrive. Using native plants attracts more butterflies, hummingbirds, and other desired wildlife into our local environment and your outdoor space. Planting native species will also help reduce the use and spread of invasive ones. Landscapes with invasive species can have many negative impacts on our local ecosystem. It can lead to the extinction of native species as they compete for food, water, light, and habitat; a reduction in the biodiversity of our natural environment; the spread of diseases from invasive to native species; the erosion and degradation in our soils; and can even alter fire cycles creating a risk for increased wildfires in our local regions. To help restore our local ecosystem, our mission is to educate our local community, incorporate more native plants in our outdoor spaces, and reduce the planting and spread of invasive species.

“Daniel’s knowledge of native plants is impressive. He transformed my boring front yard into a natural oasis, using native plants and natural materials of my liking. He also designed a swell to prevent future flooding in my driveway and yard after the heavy rains we’ve recently experienced here in Ojai.

About us

Wild at Hart Nursery & Design’s lead designer, Daniel Hart, has spent the past 17 years working with rare and endemic plant species, restoring ecosystems throughout the Los Padres National Forest and the central coast. With a background in landscape design and construction, he felt commercial and residential landscaping was underserved, with the many beautiful native plants we have available. With Wild at Hart Nursery & Design, Daniel hopes to help bring more native species into the region to help restore local habitats and reduce the spread of invasive species.

With his formal education in landscape design and a vast knowledge of the native flora, Daniel began converting residential landscapes to more natural habitats. Often relying on traditional landscape architecture with permaculture and native restoration in mind, he has successfully helped his clients achieve the natural, native outdoor space of their dreams.
